Question:Why does one of the following messages (in a gray or green window) appear in QuickBooks?
  • No Company Open
  • No Company Opened
  • There is no company file open
Possible
Cause:

Below are the most common situations that cause this message window to appear:

  • The data file that was last open in QuickBooks has since moved to a different location. When QuickBooks is restarted, it searches for (but cannot find) the file in the last known location, resulting in the message window.
  • The data file has been closed by choosingClose Company from the File menu.
  • With a data file open, the userchose Open Company from the File menu and then clicked Cancel in the Open a Company window (orthe user chose New Company from the File menu and then clicked Leave in theEasyStep Interview window).

    • Because only one data file can be open at a time, QuickBooks closes the open data file when choosingOpen Company or New Company. If the user then decides not to open or create another company data file, the message window appears.

  • The person whomost recentlyused QuickBooks quit the program while there was no data file open. When QuickBooks is restarted, itis unable to determine which file to open, resulting in the message window.

As long as this window is open, QuickBooks displays no menu options (other than File),centers, reminders, toolbars, etc.

Answer:

To open your company data file, follow these directions:

  1. From the QuickBooks File menu, choose Open Company.
  2. In the Open a Company window, click the Look In drop-down arrow and browse to the location of your company data file. (If you are unable to locate it, skip to Step 4.)
  3. Select your company filename, and then click Open.
  4. If you are unable to locate your company data file in Step 2, try searching for it. Once located, double-click the filename to open it.

    • Should there be multiple search results (not including the sample company files), examine the size and date of the files.Generally, the largest file with the most recent modified date is the correct file to open.
