Product Updates

Free updates areavailable online through your QuickBooks software using the QuickBooks Update Service. (A manual download alternative is also available. This is recommended if you have multiple versions of QuickBooks installed on the same computer.)

Check the current release of your QuickBooks program

With QuickBooks open, hold down the Control key and press the number 1 (CTRL+1). Use the number one key at the top of your keyboard rather than the one on the numbers pad to the right.

QuickBooks will display a Product Information window. The first line of the Product Informationwindow gives the QuickBooks product followed by the release. If it says R5, you already have the latest release. Otherwise, use the directions below to install the latest program update.

Depending on your modem speed, the capabilities of your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and overall Internet traffic, downloading a release update may take 30 minutes or longer.

QuickBooks Update Service (preferred method)

Note: Please use the Manual Download section below if you have multiple versions of QuickBooks installed on this computer.

1. Open QuickBooks, and then from the Online menu, choose the QuickBooks Update Service.

   If you have not set up your Internet Connection to work with QuickBooks, click Configure and follow the instructions.

2. In the QuickBooks Update Service window, click Go Online.

3. The QuickBooks Update Status window displays and shows you what the Service is downloading and the estimated percentage of completion. You may click Cancel at any time, but you will not receive all updates if you do so.

4. When your computer is finished, check the Updates Received section of the QuickBooks Update Service window for asterisks next to the updates received.

Note: You must update QuickBooks each time the program is uninstalled and reinstalled.

Manual Download (alternative method)

Note: Please use this method if you have multiple versions of QuickBooks installed on this computer.

As an alternative to using the QuickBooks Update Service, you can manually download and install the release 5 (R5) patch.

Trial Version: Please do not use this method if you are using the Trial Version of QuickBooks or QuickBooks Pro. Installing the downloadable update will prevent you from unlocking the Trial Version to the Full version if you decide to purchase it.

Note: You must update QuickBooks each time the program is uninstalled and reinstalled.
